This is a view of our wet lab where much of our sample prep takes place. At anytime, you may find someone making vesicles, nanoparticles, or self-assembled monolayers/multilayers. Typically there is music blaring, timers beeping, instruments and robots churning, glove box huffing, the buzz of the sonicator, lots of lively talking, and science being done. Vesicle preparation involves inserting fluorescent dye into the lipid membranes, so we can observe domains of liquid and fluid phases. The prep procedure involves an important button pushing sequence - so a timer sounds every five minutes for an hour (hence the beeping). Nanoparticles are synthesized to be imaged and characterized by STM. This results in lots of fun solutions with a wide-spectrum of pretty colors. The selective growth of self-assembled multilayers on substrates for the molecular ruler process has been automated. The robot for this process has quite a personality and you should hear the noises it makes when it gets mad. Feel free to stop by and join the fun anytime!
