The following area students were included in the 34th annual edition of "Who's Who Among American High School Students, 1999-2000," based on academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities: From Port Matilda: Allison Beckwith, Brosi A. Chiswick-Patterson, Samantha Contis, Susan Crandall, Linda Daubert, Jialin Dou, Sophia D. Drago, Amber L. Gates, Sara Geleskie, Sally Gimbert, Amanda C. Three local students had their designs chosen from among hundreds submitted by area art teachers for greeting cards, the sales of which benefit Children's Miracle Network. They are: Alyssa Cousins, a first-grader, and Olivia Gover, a fifth-grader, both at Our Lady of Victory School; and Amelia Kristofik, a student at Port Matilda Elementary School.
The September Elks Teen-agers of the Month from State College are Ravi Bhatia and Rebecca Griffith Bhatia is a senior at State College Area High School with a grade point average of 4.51 and a class rank of 19. Bhatia is active in his school's broadcast program, serving as program director, broadcaster and scriptwriter. He is also a sports editor for the Little Lion yearbook and participates in varsity tennis, student adviser committee and student government. Bhatia has received the Lion's Paw Citizenship Award, the Principal's Award and served as an ambassador to the World Affairs Seminar. Griffith is a senior at State College Area High School with a grade point average of 4.43 and a class rank of 30. She has received the Power of the Paws Award, the Principal's Award, the sophomore and junior senate award and has been recognized for her achievements in German, English and world cultures. Griffith participates in softball, volleyball and student government. She is also an artist whose artwork can be found at the Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville and the 1996-1997 school calendar. The September Elks Teen-agers of the Month from Penns Valley are Wyatt Kearns and Emily Miller. Kearns is a senior at Penns Valley Area High School with a grade point average of 4.0 and a rank first in his class. Kearns is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in basketball, softball, the Science Olym-piad, Boy Scouts, and his church youth group. Miller is a senior at Penns Valley Area High School with a grade point average of 3.9 and rank second in her class. She is a recipient of the Presidential Merit Award and is a Kodak and Xerox Young Leader. Miller participates in softball and soccer and is a member of the National Art Honor Society and serves as president of the National Honor Society.
The October Elks Teen-agers of the Month from State College Area High School are Eleanor Rose and Matthew Garrison. Rose is a senior at State College Area High School with a grade point average of 4.31 and a class rank of 49. She is a recipient of the Principal's Award, The Power of the Paws Award and the Advanced World Cultures Award. She is active in student government and yearbook and participates in the Penn State Figure Skating Club, Ice Rhythms, and teaches Sunday school at Congregation Brit Shalom. Garrison is a senior at State College Area High School with a grade point average of 4.61 and is fifth in his class. He is a recipient of the Principal's Award and placed second in the Pennsylvania State Essay Writing Contest. Matthew is active in student government, track and field, cross country and the State High Knowledge Masters Team. The October Elks Teen-agers of the Month from Penns Valley Area High School are Rebecca Siegenthaler and Drew Haerer. Siegenthaler is a senior at Penns Valley Area High School with a grade point average of 3.12 and a class rank of 34. She is active as a student trainer in football and participates in Powder Puff Football. Rebecca also serves as a student mentor and was her 10th-grade class treasurer. Haerer is a senior at Penns Valley Area High School with a grade point average of 3.67 and a class rank of 10. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. He participates in football, baseball, Boy Scouts, Varsity Club and has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students.
Nathan Hosterman, a graduate of Penn State with a degree in wood products, has earned a master of science degree in wood science and forest products from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va. He is a methods specialist engineer for Woodmode Custom Cabinetry in Kreamer and lives with his wife, Kathryn, in Northumberland. He is a son of Chris and Linda Hosterman of Spring Mills.
State College Area High School District, represented by John Lesieutre and Walter Weiss, both of State College, took first-place high-school team honors at a USA Junior Chess Olympics tournament held recently in Bradford. Each player had four matches in the one-day event. Weiss took second place in the high-school division while Lesieutre took first place in the junior high- school division and was first overall with 3.5 points. He is a ninth-grader at State College Area High School. Lesieutre is an eighth-grader at Centre Learning Community charter school. Brendan Coulson, also of State College, placed fourth in the elementary division of the tournament. He is a fifth-grader at Park Forest Elementary School.
Anna Bialostosky, 11, of State College, received second prize in the September 2000 Cricket League writing competition for her poem, "Ode to the Weirdest Person in the World." Her poem appears in the December 2000 issue of Cricket magazine.
Carrie Means, a graduate of State College Area High School and a junior marketing major at Clarion University, recently danced in the "Dance for the Millennium" concert at the university. She is a daughter of Bob Means of State College. |
